OCD Cognitive Strategies and Recovery Workshops

New groups starting May (Surrey Hills and Broadmeadows)

The group program consists of 6 x 1.5 hour weekly sessions.  In between session participants also have the opportunity to have follow up phone contact by a Companion volunteer from ARCVic who will provide support and encouragement regarding group homework and to brainstorm any potential hurdles participants may be facing.

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is a type of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) which is the gold standard treatment for OCD and forms a core component of this program. The basis of ERP is that individuals are gradually exposed to feared situations (actual or imagined) and are encouraged to resist engaging in associated compulsions.  Through repeated exposure individuals essentially retrain their brain to learn that their most feared outcome will not actually occur, even if they do not engage in compulsions.  All participants will also be supported to develop a toolbox of skills to help handle anxiety related to their obsessions, such as the use of mindfulness and relaxation techniques. The group format also benefits many people suffering from similar symptoms as it provides a space for understanding and empathy that they may not feel they have in other areas of their lives.
